Project | 01 French Election
In my freshman year, before I had even declared International Studies as my major, I took Comparative Politics.  The class was an overview of the political workings of other countries.  In our France unit, we were required to write a paper about the 2017 French Presidential and Parliament Election.  I didn't love the class, but I thought that writing this paper really contributed to my education about France's political systems.
I chose to include this paper as one of my artifacts because I actually loved writing it.  I don't normally enjoy writing papers at all, it's very hard for me to organize my thoughts and ideas and write them down on paper, but this paper felt like it wrote itself.  This was also the first major paper I ever wrote.  Anything I had done in high school was never longer than 3-5 pages and this paper is 12 pages.

Project | 02 Japanese Project Presentations

I've had a passion for Japanese culture since i was very young and ever since I began watching anime and reading manga, I've wanted to learn the language.  I've enjoyed my time in the Japanese department at UW-Oshkosh so much.  I've loved all of my classes and have made all my friends there.  I've included a few of my favorite project presentations that I've written in the last three years to show what I have learned.

The first link is an assignment titled "Manga Presentation."  The assignment was to introduce a friend to the class and talk about why they are a good friend and what you do together.  It is part of the manga unit because we also had to draw our friend as an anime character. This was one of the first presentation assignments we had.  I want to show my progress with learning the language which is why I chose to show this first.

The second link is titled "Japanese Presentation."  The assignment was to chose something that comes from Japan, explain it, and then compare it to something similar from the United States.  I chose to write about anime and then compare it to the Nickelodeon cartoon series "Avatar the Last Airbender" because Avatar drew great inspiration from Japanese culture and from anime.

The third link is titled "Sports Presentation."  This assignment was very simple.  We were to choose any sport that we liked and describe it.  I chose volleyball because I used to play volleyball in high school and still love the sport to this day.  This is also my most recent Japanese project presentation which is why I chose to show it last.

Project | 03 The Women of the 1857 Indian Rebellion

One of my favorite history classes I took during my time at university was titled "Special Topics in NW History (Mutiny and Revolt)." India was not, and still isn't an area I'm super familiar with, nor was it an Asian studies course I was all that interested in.  I decided to take this class because my adviser recommended it to me.  I ended up loving it!  This assignment was to write a paper on any topic regarding the 1857 Indian Rebellion.  I chose to research and write about the women that were involved in the battles but glossed over in the history books.  This paper was hard for me to write because it was my first time writing a history paper and using Chicago style, but I loved doing the research.  When I finished writing this paper, I didn't feel very confident in it.  I didn't feel like I had analyzed enough or done any of the formatting for Chicago style correctly.  However, my professor said "This is a near perfect paper aside from a few grammatical errors! Great job!"  I felt good to have something I wasn't confident in turn into something great.

Project | 03 Surving Civil War: Overcoming the Loss of a Loved One
The best class I took in college was a Human Services course titled "Refugees and Migration."  I have always been passionate about the refugee crisis and defending immigrants, which is why I chose to take this course.  The assignment for the final paper was to interview a refugee or an immigrant and ask them to tell us their story.  Then we were to focus on three traumas that our acquaintance has lived with and report on those traumas.  The girl I interview was a girl that I worked with who is a refugee from Syria.  I heard her story and realized that she was living with the trauma of having to leave her home, PTSD and survivors guilt from seeing her best friend murdered, her brother stabbed, and her family separated.  I have followed the civil war in Syria for many years and followed the refugee crisis so hearing someone's story first hand was really eye opening.
This was probably the most important class I took in college, and I strongly believe that every single student should be required to take it.  Especially International Studies majors. This is ultimately why I chose to include this paper in my artifacts.
